How to use Redact PDF

Many redaction tools only draw a black box, and the text underneath can still be copied. Here, every page you redact is rebuilt so the marked content no longer exists in the file, while the rest of the page stays searchable.

  1. Open your PDF. It stays on your device.

  2. Draw boxes, select text, or search for names, emails, phone numbers and IBANs to mark every occurrence.

  3. Save the redacted copy and review it before sharing.

How it works

Questions

Is the redacted text really gone?

Yes. Pages with redactions are rebuilt from an image in which the marked areas are painted over, and the original page content is not copied into the new file. Text outside the boxes is added back as an invisible searchable layer that excludes the redacted words.

Can I still search the redacted document?

Yes, for everything that was not redacted. Copying and searching work on the remaining text.

Does it work on scanned documents?

Yes, by drawing boxes over the areas to hide. Search only finds words in documents that contain real text, so run OCR PDF first if you want to search a scan.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Redaction runs entirely in your browser. The document is never sent to a server.

What else is removed?

By default the document properties (author, title and so on), comments, links, scripts, attachments and bookmarks are removed as well, because they can also contain sensitive information.
